Palatine Hill rises 40 meters (131 feet) above the Roman Forum, reaching 51 meters (168 feet) above sea level, with a perimeter of approximately 1,740 meters (5,700 feet). According to legend, this is where Romulus founded Rome, and archaeological excavations have uncovered remains spanning from prehistoric settlements to the grand imperial palaces of Augustus and Domitian.
